Apple is set to reveal details of its software developer kit for the iPhone, as well as an enterprise-related announcement for the device.
CEO Steve Jobs is to unveil the software development kit (SDK) on Thursday at an invitation-only event at Apple's Cupertino headquarters in California. Access to the SDK for the iPhone will enable developers to build third-party applications for the device.
Developers are understandably keen to find out what Apple's plans are for the kit and just how much freedom they will be permitted in developing third-party applications. Up until now Apple has only allowed developers to create applications through the phone's web browser, which limited their ability to develop apps that worked with the iPhone's touchscreen and other functions.
Rumours are circulating that Apple's terms will be restrictive, with Apple-watching site iLounge suggesting that the iPhone maker will effectively act as 'gatekeeper', formally approving or denying applications as it sees fit.
In any case, the SDK could open up the phone to all manner of applications, such as photo-editing, gaming and blogging. Any third-party applications are likely to be available for download via the iTunes store, according to reports.
As for the enterprise-related announcement, as yet it's unclear just what that's going to entail. Suggestions doing the rounds include the addition of a push e-mail client, security enhancements, synchronisation ability and personal information management (PIM) tools. Adding functions like these would undoubtedly enhance the iPhone's credibility as an enterprise-oriented device and improve its chances of being able to compete effectively in the smartphone market.
The iPhone will launch in Ireland on 14 March exclusively on the O2 network.
