Trinity College Dublin's part-time degree course in Information Systems is aimed at providing IT workers with the tools necessary to make their move up the career ladder.
Traditionally an organisation's Information Technology (IT) department has been located in the back rooms, dusty corners and dungeons of the office. However, in the past few years the role of the IT department has evolved dramatically to become one of the most important organs of any business, and as such commands attention at board level.
In order to keep up with this changing trend, IT workers are facing the challenge of developing not just their IT skills but also their communication, business and management skills. Communication, for example, is fundamental to many IT roles: project management, systems analysis, architecture, support, training, etc. These non-technical aspects of the job, however, are given little weight in many existing IT courses’.
For those already working within the IT sector, moving up the career ladder can prove difficult without the full complement of skills, from IT expertise to business knowledge. Trinity College Dublin's part-time degree programme in Information Systems aims to enable participants not only to expand on their existing IT skills but also to help them develop the communication and management elements that are now proving so important. Ultimately, the course aims to produce rounded business professionals, who will be able to work at all levels of an organisation and are as familiar with business concepts as they are with technology.

The Information Systems degree programme is aimed at established IT staff, as well as other professionals who want to move into the area of business IT. The four-year programme consists of two courses, each lasting two years:
- Diploma in Information Systems
- B.Sc. Degree (Honours) in Information Systems
Classes are held in the evening and at weekends, on only 22 weeks of each year, which means that participants can fit study around their busy schedules. Online resources mean that participants can work on practical exercises and coursework at a time that suits them. Because the degree programme is split into two components -- Diploma and Degree -- participants have the flexibility to take a break in their studies and continue as and when they wish.
