A new website has been launched to give Irish computer users an opportunity to donate some of their computing power to science research.
Irelandboinc.com offers Irish computer users a means to volunteer some of there home or work computing power to any number of science projects. Visitors to the website can download a program called BOINC that will allow them to contribute their excess capacity.
BOINC, which stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, was developed by a team at the University of California, Berkeley. Once a user connects their computer to one of the BOINC projects, some of its spare time and capacity will be used to process scientific data for that project.
There are over 50 projects that Irish people can donate power to through the website. These include Rosetta@home, which carries out cancer and HIV research, Predictor@home, which does work on protein-related diseases, and World Community Grid, which conducts research on several different areas of medicine.
The aim of the Irelandboinc.com is to promote science in Ireland and to bring real-life science projects into schools, colleges, universities and into people's homes.
All the instructions on how to get involved are on the website www.irelandboinc.com.
