Intel and IRCSET in research link-up
18-06-2007
by Emmet Ryan
Intel and the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) are co-operating on a research project to help older people.
The project will see the two organisations co-fund six PhD students to research independent living options for older people. In total, funding of EUR432,000 will be provided over three years and is part of Intel's commitment to the Technology Research for Independent Living (TRIL) centre, established by the chip giant in conjunction with IDA Ireland, with a three year investment of USD30 million.
The TRIL centre is a research initiative aimed at addressing the growing wave of ageing citizens in Europe and around the world. The centre aims to develop technologies to help people who are ageing to do so in the place they choose to live.
TRIL will collaborate with several Irish universities, including University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin and the National University of Ireland, Galway to create one of the largest research efforts of this type in the world.
In order to support the research activities of the TRIL Centre, Intel and IRCSET will sponsor six PhD level research students in computer science, computing, information technologies and bioinformatics, sensor design for biomedical applications, electronic engineering, biomechanical engineering, applied mathematics and industrial design.
The research co-funding will be administered by IRCSET through its Enterprise Partnership Scheme. Applicants will be chosen from qualifying candidates in an open competition under IRCSET's postgraduate research scholarship programme.
"We are delighted to collaborate with Intel to support their admirable commitment to the TRIL centre. The challenges posed by the ageing population must be addressed through research of this kind. The contribution of these six PhD scholars is likely to have significant impact across a number of areas of relevance to older people in their daily lives," said Martin Hynes, executive director, IRCSET.
