YouTube hits iPhone

Apple also announced that starting Wednesday, Apple TV users can download a free software update that allows them to "easily navigate through YouTube's familiar video browsing categories or search for specific videos." Those with YouTube memberships can log-in to their accounts through the app, much as they would at YouTube.com.
On 29 June, iPhone buyers will have similar access to YouTube though another Apple-designed app, wirelessly streaming videos onto the phone via Wi-Fi or AT&T's EDGE network. AT&T, which recently acquired full ownership of Cingular through its acquisition of BellSouth, is Apple's exclusive wireless partner in the US.
"iPhone delivers the best YouTube mobile experience by far," claimed Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "Now users can enjoy YouTube wherever they are -- on their iPhone, on their Mac or on a widescreen TV in their living room with Apple TV."
In May, Apple announced that YouTube had started encoding videos in H.264 format, a more-efficient video codec suited to mobile devices, sparking rumours that the site would provide videos for the iPhone. According to Apple, over 10,000 H.264 videos will be available from YouTube by the time the iPhone ships. Neither Apple nor YouTube responded to requests for comment.
