Eircom's network upgrade begins

29-11-2006

by Ciara O'Brien

Eircom has secured a deal with Siemens and ADVA Optical Networks that will see the telecoms firm begin upgrading its network.

As part of a three-year, EUR10 million contract, the incumbent plans to increase its core telecoms network capacity to help support business and broadband growth in Ireland.

According to Eircom, the investment will mean higher speeds for broadband customers, with up to 25Mb per second being suggested, and increased availability of services that are currently out of reach of Irish users. These extra services include IPTV and video-on-demand.

"This announcement marks the first step on the road to Next Generation Network (NGN). The telecommunications environment is becoming increasingly competitive and complex, and enhanced customer service is key," said Eircom chief executive, Rex Comb.

"Eircom's continued investment will essentially transform the communications services that we offer to customers in Ireland."

There are currently more than 325,000 customers signed up to Eircom's broadband services in Ireland.

The telecoms firm recently announced that it would invest up to EUR1 billion on telecommunications projects in Ireland over the next three years. This will comprise of fixed line and mobile capital expenditure of EUR250 million per year and an incremental capital expenditure of up to EUR300 million for the investment period.

The extra investment will allow the company develop the next generation core IP network and begin rolling out fibre to the curb (FTTC).
