Who Wants Broadband?
Ireland still offers relatively little in the way of affordable, high-speed, always-on Internet access. But recent surveys suggest Ireland's population may not be clamouring for broadband.

Colt Telecom has bucked recent trends by officially opening its Internet Solutions Centre (ISC) in Dublin on Wednesday.

Colt said that the ISC on Dublin's Long Mile Road will offer high-bandwidth access over its own end-to-end fibre optic network or the networks of other operators, along with managed services. The company is confident that the centre will prove popular with businesses despite the recent closures of several data centres in Ireland.

"We know the business model because our centres in London have performed very well and we believe that the demand does exist for managed services data centres in this country," the company's managing director for Ireland, Gary Keogh, told ElectricNews.Net.

Recent high-profile data centre casualties in Ireland have include WorldPort, Wolfe Group, Cityreach and 360 Networks. It is now thought that there are 14 data centres in Ireland with a total of around 400,000 square feet of data centre space available on the market here.

The first phase of Colt's Dublin ISC has 8,000 square feet and customers include ELLKO, Ananova, Fidelity, Akamai and DoubleClick. Keogh said that the centre has a total capacity of between 50,000 and 60,000 square feet and that additional space will be opened up as demand requires it.

He added that he expected demand for space in the centre to grow significantly in the next 12 months. However, Keogh commented that the company was taking a "methodical" approach to filling the centre and it may take up to 18 months for it to be filled completely.

The official opening of Colt's Dublin centre, which was carried out by An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, TD, has completed the company's European ISC construction programme. It now has hosting facilities in 16 cities across Europe with a backbone into the US and more than 450 peering arrangements.

Colt Telecom has been operating in Ireland since late 2000 and offers a range of telecoms services including frame relay, leased lines, ATM and international voice. Currently, its services are only available in Dublin.

Around IEP25 million has been invested in its Irish operation to date, including the spend on the Internet Services Centre. The company employs 40 people in Ireland.
