Lindows adds new features to its operating system | EMC accuses Hitachi of patent infringement

Lindows.com released a second "Sneak Preview" of its Linux-based operating system and added features for streamlining the process of installing new software for viewing and printing non-Linux file formats. Eventually Lindows hopes to launch an inexpensive non-Windows operating system that can run Microsoft applications. The current version cannot do this. For the moment however, the company is embroiled in a lawsuit with Microsoft for use of the Lindows name

EMC Corporation has filed patent infringement complaints with the International Trade Commission (ITC) and US District Court in Worcester, Massachusetts, against Hitachi Data Systems Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd. EMC alleges that HDS and Hitachi have engaged in unlawful activities in importing into the United States products that infringe six EMC patents. Those patents include four that are the foundation of EMC's SRDF (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) and TimeFinder software products. Two other EMC patents, relating to data migration and the storage of mainframe data, are also included in the suits. The alleged infringing Hitachi products include HORC, HOARC and ShadowImage.

Royal Philips Electronics unveiled an 802.11a wireless local area network (WLAN) solution to receive the CE Mark for the European Union market.

On Friday at Microsoft TechEd 2002, Microsoft outlined a vision for the future of computing based on XML Web services. In his keynote address, Microsoft senior vice president of .NET Enterprise Servers Paul Flessner outlined three pillars of computing -- application models, data and trustworthy computing -- that he said will provide the foundation for the next generation of XML Web services platforms.

The Online Publishers Association announced the results of a media mix study undertaken with Millward Brown IntelliQuest, which tested recall and memorability of on-line and television advertising following a single exposure to the ad creative. The study concluded that there is a positive, synergistic effect when TV and on-line advertising are used in combination. In a test of day-after ad recall, those who had been exposed to both the TV and the on-line ads were significantly more likely to remember the TV ad than those who were exposed only to the TV ad.

Philips and Eatoni Ergonomics have entered into an agreement whereby Philips acquires rights to install Eatoni's LetterWise text entry software in its SMS enabled cordless phones.

DoubleClick Inc., on Friday reported revenue of USD83.7 million for the first quarter of 2002. Gross margins improved over 500 basis points versus first quarter 2001 to 61.7 percent. GAAP net loss was USD6.0 million or USD0.04 per share, within the range of pro forma EPS guidance provided by the company. Exclusive of certain non-cash and non-recurring items, pro forma net income was USD1.4 million for the first quarter with pro forma EPS of USD0.01. Total company pro forma operating expenses for the first quarter of 2002 were USD52.8 million, a 37 percent decrease over operating expenses of USD83.9 million for the first quarter of 2001.

Xerox Corporation has concluded its settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company has been under investigation since June 2000 and as a result, the Commission filed a complaint and a consent order in federal district court for injunctive relief and a civil penalty of USD10 million. Under the terms of the settlement, the company announced last week that it will restate its financials for the years 1997 through 2000 as well as adjust previously announced 2001 results.
