Smart Telecom rolls out 'triple play' to new residential developments in Dublin | Novell and IBM acquire Open Source software makers
Business software maker Novell announced that it has acquired Immunix, the creator of AppArmor, a Linux security system. The new product, to be called Novell AppArmor powered by Immunix, protects both the Linux operating system and applications from external or internal attacks, viruses, and malicious applications, the company claimed. Terms of the purchase were not announced.
Smart Telecom said that it has begun rolling out a new "triple play service," incorporating a combined television, telephone and broadband internet service, to new residential developments in Dublin. Called Smart Vision, the product offers developers and builders the opportunity to install the required fibre at building stage and means each individual home in the complex will benefit from services such as digital TV, digital radio, a telephone service, and an unlimited access to a 2Mbps internet connection. Currently Smart Vision is available in 7,000 new apartment dwellings across Dublin.
Irish company Vordel, the XML web services security company, announced the appointment of German firm, SHE-IT as a reseller of its XML security software in the German marketplace. SHE-IT has a strong reputation for delivering security systems integration expertise to leading companies in the financial services, telecoms and industrial sectors in Germany, Vordel claimed.
Card Commerce, a Dublin-based international provider of prepaid and stored value card (SVC) solutions, has been shortlisted for an award in the European Retail Solutions Awards 2005. The company was nominated for its PayPlus giftcard platform which was launched in Eason and Son in October 2004.
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has announced its support for a new initiative in higher education. Spearheaded by the Royal Irish Academy (RIA), with financial support from the HEA, the initiative will see the establishment of a series of six RIA Gold Medals, two of which will be awarded each year. The main objective of the Awards is to raise awareness about the knowledge society in Ireland by bringing to public attention the achievement of outstanding scholars in Ireland. Awards will be made in the humanities, social science, physical and mathematical science, life science, engineering sciences, the environment and geosciences.
International Business Machines announced that it has acquired Gluecode Software, a California-based provider of software and support services for open source application infrastructure. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed. IBM said that the acquisition would enable it to offer software and support services to the open source community.
Online music firm Napster has opened an online mobile phone ringtone store dubbed Napstertones. The service is currently available in the US and has been delivered in partnership with mobile entertainment content firm Dwango Wireless. Napster will sell polyphonic ring-tones, master-tones and voice-tones of artist "shout-outs". Prices range from USD1.99 to USD2.99.
