Building a School Web site

You don't have to be a teacher to enjoy this site, which aims to
help any absolute beginners create their first presence on the
Web. The site assumes no knowledge at all: learn what the
Internet is and where it came from, plus what your responsibilities
are when you put information onto it. The site includes a "Five
Easy Pieces" guide on the files, words, pictures, colours and
links that make up every Web site, and addresses important issues
of the standards of the Web and its bandwidth restrictions. The
whole guide is printable, too, for more comfortable reading
away from the keyboard.

It wasn't all good times with green eggs and ham for Dr. Seuss,
the children's author and illustrator. This site from the
University of California at San Diego catalogues Seuss's
little-known newspaper cartoons penned for the New York newspaper
PM from 1941 to 1943. Listed chronologically, the cartoons
depict scowling Hitlers and comically grotesque Japanese and
German citizens, all spookily reminiscent of the long-necked
heroes from Seuss's children's books. An eye-opening experience
for fans of this beloved author.

Art lovers should take a moment to browse this on-line studio's
collection of limited-edition photography of Ireland, Scotland,
England and Wales. A nice touch are the maps with each photo that
pinpoint where each was taken. Visitors can also submit a free
photo search request by email to see if Celtic Camera has the
pictures they're seeking; a good addition would be a tool to let
visitors find photos themselves with an online search.

No, it's not a new firm of solicitors. Take a break from the
mainstream coverage of Ireland's tribunal dramas with some offbeat
poetry on the same theme: "In a storm on radio and TV,/ They
chased Burke to the vale of Raheny. / But with a wave of his
hand, / He drew a line in the sand / And sailed over the walls
of Kinsealy."

Get your Irish news with a twist. Of particular note is the the
collapse of the Euro (in a night club: "The currency was attending
a birthday bash thrown by the Dollar in a New York venue when it
fell over whilst on the dance floor") and unrest in Dublin zoo
among placard-bearing lions, tigers and pumas. "We believe that
this 'wild cat strike' may be the work of one particularly militant
leopard with a number of personal problems," said a Dublin Zoo
official.

Re-inventing the art of essay writing, this Irish site syndicates
feature stories by Irish journalists to other Web sites and outlets
around the world. Viewing the articles is free, but anyone wanting
to syndicate the content must get the consent of the site's owners.
Snappy writing and pensive arguments make these features worth a
click: from Irish angles on US Prohibition to the arrival of
Francis Bacon's studio in Dublin.

It's not completely finished yet, but this site already has a lot
to offer anyone who needs to find places to go in London. Click on
the Tube map, choose a meeting place, click to arrange a meeting,
and your colleagues or friends will be emailed with details: SMS is
coming soon. Pubs, cafes, restaurants and clubs are all included,
and a list of the most popular venues is also featured. A good way
to arrange meetings, especially for groups.

If you or anyone know you is visually impaired or blind, this Web-
based transcribing service could be the most useful site on the
Web. Just type in any text and this site will translate it into
Braille and deliver it free. The site is fully international -- its
staff will translate text from up to 19 languages into Braille --
and users can submit up to 500 words, or around four Braille pages.
The service is free because it bears the US "Free Matter for the
Blind" stamp, so HotBraille incurs no costs, even for text
delivered overseas.

See Ireland at its best with this selection of photos from Pascal
Boret, covering the Aran Islands, Connemara, Dublin, Killarney and
more. The site bills its photos, which are all for sale, as top

This slick new site for college-age Irish students is a force to be
reckoned with. Fabulously well researched and thoroughly hip, the
site lets students read or contribute travel writing or book
flights, check out movie features and reviews, music snippets and
reviews or use a free web-based email package. If you think you can
stand the steely gaze of a webcam, sign up to be considered for No.
54, a house where four Irish students will live, study and sleep
for the cameras from September to December this year.
