Google, the heart of mobile web

11-11-2009

by Ralph Averbuch

Google's acquisition of AdMob shows that it intends to dominate the mobile internet.

The Motorola Dext is just one of many handsets coming out with Google's Android OSGoogle clearly sees the future of the web as a mobile one. Recent reports of Google's acquisition of specialist mobile advertising startup AdMob is further evidence of the strategy the company intends to implement to ensure continued dominance in online advertising. That's not surprising. Most people do not have PCs and internet connections. Far more have mobiles and it's cheaper to roll out wireless infrastructure to the rest of the world than it is to dig holes in the ground and lay wires or fibre to different places. Plainly Google wants to make sure that when the shift comes it will be leading from the front and setting, rather than following, the trend. That's a process we're starting to see now as mobiles begin to morph into smartphones. It's also where Google is; at the heart of the action fostering the market with its free smartphone OS Android. A huge number of handsets are slated for launch next year and no prizes for guessing which mobile OS they will be using. That's going to quickly give Google a very direct relationship with the consumer as so much functionality - email, maps, location services, search - are cooked into the OS. A lot of me-too phone manufacturers will join the fray forcing down the price of handsets to the point where they are no more expensive than earlier models. It's likely most new handsets a few years from now will be smartphones and a lot of them will be running Android. And as usual, if any company is going to find a way to make money out of the mobile internet, the betting's going to be on Google to lead where everyone else feels compelled to follow.

Google, the heart of mobile web

Delivering billion of advertisement isn't impossible to reach with the use of Mobile Advertising. Choosing the best Mobile Ad Network is challenging to do. AdMob, the mobile advertising company, will likely be well utilized by Google and their Android platform, which has been selling like hotcakes – heck, if you tell these cell phone/tech dummies that it has Android, you could get them to pay hundreds for a lead balloon. Acquiring AdMob is a good move for Google.
