Palm readies release of phone PDA | Microsoft takes fight against spam to court to stop mail-harvesters
Palm is claiming that its next PDA, the Tungsten W, which combines a phone, e-mail service and typical organiser functions, will go on sale in the US by the end of the month. Europe, however, will have to wait a little longer. It is expected to sell for USD549 minus any air time contract. With telecom subsidy it may be cheaper. O2 already sells the mono and colour palm-compatible Handspring Treo in Europe.
Garmin Europe has released the latest version of City Navigator Europe for the StreetPilot III portable in-car satellite navigation system, containing extended digital mapping for Ireland and Western Europe. Satnav Ireland, which has been appointed distributor for Ireland for StreetPilot III, said the new release will let business and vacation drivers take advantage of GPS satellite navigation.
A Scottish hotel is being put up for sale for a price tag of about STG7. The Kimberley Hotel near Oban is valued at more than STG1 million, but its Austrian owners have decided to sell it through a Web based prize draw rather than on the open market. Next-Generation Security Software, a UK security business which pinpointed a flaw allowing the Slammer worm to spread on Oracle database applications, said it has discovered six more flaws in Oracle's latest database product. More information is on the Next-Generation Security Software Web site.
Microsoft is going after spammers after filing a lawsuit against those suspected of collecting e-mails from Hotmail servers to subsequently spam subscribers. The suit does not actually name any defendants. At the same time Microsoft is calling for new laws to prevent the common practice of spam-address harvesting.
A Limerick-based software development company, Narragansett Technologies, has designed and brought to market a new e-mail marketing software solution, using Microsoft's .Net platform. Called SpinnakerPro, it is aimed at enterprise customers in Ireland and overseas. Esearch Limited, near Cork, also offers a Web-based solution branded Newsweaver.
Roicast, developer of Web and data analysis software, has announced Roicast Caliper. The company claims Caliper is the first Web measurement tool to enable marketing managers to define what on-line criteria to measure, and view the results in real-time from their desktop. Roicast's client list includes Texaco, Reed Elsevier and the Belgian Postal service.
