Lexar breaks 4 gigabyte barrier

by Ralph Averbuch
Lexar, best known for its photographic products, has launched two new compact flash cards, at 2GB and 4GB.
The new Professional Series CompactFlash line from Lexar is sure to catch the attention of both digital photographers and PDA users.
The cards come speed rated at 32X, which is supposedly capable of a minimum write speed of 32 x 150Kb/s or 4.8MB/s.
Lexar said the cards are especially suitable for professional digital photographers who prefer shooting in large file formats like TIFF and RAW.
However, don't expect these new capacities to come cheap. The 2GB will be Type I and is expected to retail in March for USD699.99, while the 4GB card will be Type II and is expected to ship in the 2nd quarter for USD1,499.99. That makes IBM's MicroDrive seem a steal at typical prices of less than EUR250.
