It's a machiavellian nightmare but if Microsoft really is giving up in it's bid for Yahoo, is that good or bad for the industry as a whole?

Did Yahoo mess up over Microsoft offer? -- So it appears that Yahoo has beaten back Microsoft's advances and has forced it to throw in the towel. Of course, this could be yet another effort to get Yahoo to come to the negotiating table. Microsoft's claims that it's no longer pursuing the buy-out of Yahoo will almost certainly depress the latter's share price and annoy quite a lot of shareholders who were effectively being offered twice the recent value for their Yahoo holding. While there was lots of commentary arguing that a marriage of these two companies would be a disaster from a business and operational perspective, it may have been the best deal for the shareholders and isn't that, after all, what's supposed to be the primary concern for the Yahoo board? As seems so often to be the case these days, neither Microsoft nor Yahoo look like winners on the web on their own any more and this recent debacle simply underscores the malaise in both company's respective business strategies. Meanwhile Google can rest easy for now, knowing that the one real (if only slight) threat to their dominance in search has been thwarted. This could turn out to be a hugely significant date; as big as the day the dot bomb occurred. Will pundits look back on this as the time that Google really became untouchable? Not bad a for a search engine that Yahoo once tried to buy. » more
