The Fleming Group connects with Magnet Networks | ComReg revises wireless broadband guidelines

Cork-based construction firm The Fleming Group is installing advanced fibre-optic broadband access in its latest development. All the apartments and offices in its mixed-use Rockbrook development in Sandyford, Dublin 18 are to be equipped with Magnet Networks' Fibre to the Home (FTTH) service. The system delivers telephone, television and internet service and also has the capacity to handle anticipated future developments in broadband-delivered content, including music- and video-on demand services as well as security and other smart applications.

ComReg has announced revised guidelines that allow existing wireless broadband providers to extend their service area to 20km. The communications regulator first launched its wireless broadband scheme in November 2003 and since than it has issued over 214 FWALA (Fixed Wireless Access Local Area ) licences to 15 companies operating throughout the country.

Denis O'Brien's Digicel has posted a 144 percent increase in subscribers since this time last year. The mobile operator now claims a total of 4.7 million customers in its 22 Caribbean and Central American markets, including 1.4 million customers in Haiti, where it has now been operating for a year. Digicel has also recently expanded into Guyana, El Salvador and Suriname and entered into a roaming partnership agreement with Vodafone.

Yahoo has appointed Blake Jorgensen as its Chief Financial Officer. Jorgensen was a co-founder of the investment banking franchise Thomas Wiesel Partners and also previously worked in the corporate finance department of Montgomery Securities. He will report directly to Yahoo chairman and CEO Terry Semel. Jorgensen replaces Susan Decker, who was appointed head of Yahoo's advertiser and publisher group as part of the company's reorganisation in December of last year.

Ice Broadband has announced the roll out of its wireless broadband service in Tullow, Co. Carlow. The company's managing director Yvonne Rooney said: "We were aware Tullow and County Carlow in general needed access to quality broadband." Ice will be offering a range of services to customers in the Carlow area, including bundled telephone and internet packages.
