Eircom reveals more job cut plans | Google buys security start-up

Eircom is to shed 900 jobs by the end of 2010, the telecoms operator has confirmed. The move is part of a major restructuring by the incumbent operator. Earlier on Wednesday, the company confirmed that it was seeking up to 400 job cuts by the end of the year, mostly through voluntary redundancies. The job cuts will affect the retail, wholesale and central services divisions.

HP has unveiled its new strategy to promote printing, dubbed Print 2.0, which it claims will make it easier to print from websites, increase print speeds and lower print costs for the digital market. HP is determined to win a significant share of some 53 trillion digital pages that are estimated to be printed in 2010. The company also announced new applications, services and an enhanced solution partner programme to help businesses improve their imaging and printing workflow, management and infrastructure.

Men are more critical of Google than their female counterparts, a new survey has claimed. According to the study by Bigmouthmedia, men are more likely than woman to criticise Google for being too commercial, with 35 percent of men holding the view, compared to 23 percent of women. The new research could be used to indicate possible future shifts in market share, the marketing agency said.

Meanwhile, Google has bought US internet security start-up GreenBorder. The firm, which specialises in virtualisation, announced the sale on its website. Google has also confirmed the purchase, saying the deal was hammered out earlier in May. The terms of the deal have not been revealed.

E-learning firm Enovation Solutions has announced its second-level teaching and learning framework, which integrates several open source software products and in-house developed tools. The framework has been built on a specially adapted version of learning management system Moodle, and includes software and services to give students, teachers, school managers and parents access to education technologies. The package also includes a website content management module.

SAP has appointed Vishal Sikka as chief technology officer, who will assume responsibility for ensuring a clear strategy for SAP products. Formerly senior vice president of architecture and chief software architect at SAP, Sikka has also worked as head of SAP's Advanced Technology Group.

EuNetworks and Deutsche Borse have a struck a deal to roll out private fibre networks for Deutsche Borse's European clients. Under the deal, Deutsche Borse clients will be linked to its access point through dark fibre connections, which will increase the bandwidth of the networks and allow for an increase in capacity in the future.
