President McAleese presents award to Trinity researcher | Internet usage down in Italy, up in the UK
The President, Mary McAleese, presented the 2008 Science Foundation Ireland President of Ireland Young Researcher Award (PIYRA) at a ceremony in Aras an Uachtarain on Thursday. Now in its fifth year, PIYRA is Science Foundation Ireland's most prestigious accolade, recognising young engineers and scientists from around the world who have displayed extraordinary ability and leadership in their field at an early stage in their career. This year's recipient is Dr Daniel Kelly, a lecturer at Trinity College Dublin, whose research focuses on regenerative adult stem cell-based technology to develop alternative sources of cells for cartilage repair. As award recipient for 2008, Dr Kelly will receive funding of EUR992,463 over the next five years.
Hosting365 has signed a deal with CarsIreland.ie to provide a server to cater for CarsIreland.ie's 200,000 unique visitors per month. The hosting firm will provide a dedicated server to the car website in order to handle the level of traffic visiting the site.
The number of active internet users in Italy dropped by over 7 percent in the month of April according to research by Nielsen Online. Elsewhere the UK figure was up slightly while Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and the US all experienced losses in the number of active internet users over April.
The Carphone Warehouse saw its revenues rise 12 percent to STG4.5 billion for the year ending 29 March. Combined distribution revenues from the firm's operations in Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden was up 19 percent to STG406 million. Separate figures for Carphone Warehouse in Ireland have yet to be released.
Jean Toomey has been promoted to IT Manager at regional broadband infrastructure provider e-net. She has been promoted from the position of Systems Administrator with the firm. Toomey holds a Degree in Information Technology and Telecommunications from University of Limerick, and is currently undertaking an MBA at Edinburgh Business School.
