Review: HP UMPC 2133

20-06-2008

by Emmet Ryan

ENN gave HP's new Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) a field test over the past fortnight. In our exclusive video we reveal how it fared.

In short, the HP UMPC 2133 has no control over the weather Gods, but it is a nifty piece of hardware. The price tag, starting at EUR575, is definitely appealing especially compared to the alternatives out there, although lightweight laptop manufacturers like Apple and Lenovo might argue that a UMPC is not in the same class as their machines. Sure, there is a substantial power difference but both kinds of devices serve the same primary purpose, to provide a lightweight alternative suitable for travel.

In this regard the 2133 performs well. The 1.27kg device is both lightweight and portable, making it easy to pack for travel. Even the ugly shape of the battery aids portability, doubling as a handy grip to hold on to.

Within that small frame comes a machine that packs a decent punch. The battery life is truly over four hours, meaning users get that much time to actually do stuff rather than having a device that's really good at staying on while inactive.

Yes the 2133 has got its faults. On the field test it took me a few days to get used to having to scrunch up to view the screen. Consider the context of when such a device would be used however. A UMPC is not an everyday device for regular functions; it is best used as a substitute for a PC or regular laptop.

When it's impractical to use PCs or laptops users need something that will step into the breach. The 2133 does not disappoint as a replacement. It fits comfortably onto the trays on aeroplane seats, which, coupled with the lengthy battery life, makes this UMPC an ideal device for users that need to work whilst on the move.

HP has delivered a machine that grows on owners with use. The one concern the PC maker should have is whether users will be willing to give the 2133 the few days required to become familiar with the device. If potential buyers can make that sacrifice, the reward will be a device that can aid them in their time of need.
