Heard of 112? Neither have we | Zuckerberg loses face

Irish retailing giant Musgrave has invested almost EUR500,000 with Dublin-based IT company Heavey RF and UCS/Aquitec to introduce advanced 'voice picking' technology in its warehouse operations. Musgrave, a partner to both the SuperValu and Centra retail networks, has deployed the technology to over 100 staff in its 280,000 square foot Kilcock, Co Kildare depot. The new system provides picking instructions to warehouse operatives via a 'text to speech' engine and is delivered through their headsets. Information is passed to and from users via a wireless local area network.

Dublin-based pTools announced the deployment of its pTools content management software (CMS) to the Lincolnshire Police Force in the UK. The pTools Intranet solution is designed to deliver current legislation and procedural guidelines to officers across the force. pTools enterprise content management software is already used by Derbyshire and Strathclyde Police. The solution will provide quick access to electronic forms and police systems and a streamlined publishing process with fully integrated security and an audit trail.

An EU survey published Wednesday has revealed that only 16 percent of Irish people are aware of the 112 service. The 112 number can be dialled, free of charge, in any European country to call for an ambulance, the fire brigade or police in an emergency. Labour's Senator Alan Kelly has called for the Irish Government to undertake a major public information campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the number in Ireland. The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) has also urged the public to be aware of the 112 service.

A Californian law firm has accidentally revealed that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg paid USD65 million to end a legal case over the origin of his company, according to reports. Zuckerberg was sued by two former university classmates who claimed that the idea for Facebook came from their social networking site HarvardConnect, now known as ConnectU. The law firm revealed the figure in a newsletter, and said that the amount was paid in cash and Facebook shares.

Microsoft's February security update fixes a total of eight security flaws, seven of which could allow remote code execution. The update addresses a pair of vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer 7 for all supported versions of Windows. It also addresses flaws in Exchange Server, which could allow an attacker to remotely take control of a targeted server. The flaw is limited to systems running Exchange Server 2000, 2003 and 2007. Other fixes aimed at addressing a remote code execution flaw in SQL Server and vulnerabilities in Office Visio, were also released. The monthly update can be accessed through Windows Automatic Update or from Microsoft's Security Central website.
