Cork gets 45 new jobs | Eircom enters mobile broadband market

There will be 45 new jobs created in Carraigaline, Co Cork as a result of a deal between UPC Ireland and call centre firm Zevas. The new jobs will be created by Zevas to support the increased workload from the partnership. Zevas supports UPC through providing telesales and web sales services for its Irish operation.

Eircom is entering the mobile broadband market with the launch of a new mobile broadband product. The plug-and-play product offers speeds of up to 7.2MB for EUR19.99 a month. Under the deal users can download up to 10GB a month and will also have free access to Eircom's Wi-Fi services at 1,000 locations nationwide.

Supercomputers are being brought in out of the cold, according to CA. The infrastructure software firm said the machines, which had traditional standalone roles, are now being used in a more integrated environment within businesses through connected mainframes. According to research by CA, 63 percent of respondents say that performance levels are excellent when a connected mainframe environment is used.

Research by security firm Espion has found that Irish organisations are now more aware of their data protection needs. "In recent months the media has intensified scrutiny on data protection and data privacy issues. This has resulted in an increased focus for organisations on this area and many have taken steps to ensure that they don't fall foul of a data protection breach," said Colm Murphy, technical director with Espion.

Irish file-sharing software firm ftopia has launched an online offering designed for use by small and medium businesses, as well as freelance and home-workers. The new service requires no technical training or long and complex installation and provides storage, sharing and file management on the web.

Dell has announced that its PowerEdge servers are the hardware foundation for the new Google Search Appliance 6.0. Dell's OEM Industry Solutions Group customised the servers that power the Google service for business customers, which aims to make it as simple to organise and search information behind the corporate firewall as it is to use Google.com.

Staying with Dell and the firm is using Twitter to generate millions in sales. The PC giant said last week that it has so far taken in over USD3 million from Twitter followers who clicked through from the PC maker's tweets to its websites and have gone on to make purchases.

Porn has been given its own corner of Microsoft's Bing search engine. Microsoft has created a separate domain within Bing that will be reserved exclusively for serving up pornographic images and videos. The domain, explicit.bing.net, will carry searchable content from adult magazine and video providers. Microsoft said it made the move to make it easier for IT managers to filter out inappropriate content.
