Inventorium seeking digital sector stars | Consumers want data breach notification
Engineers, designers, inventors, end-users and business people are being urged to apply for a place on "Inventorium" , a three-year programme of events, activities and interventions, focusing on digital sector innovation. Nearly half (46 percent) of people surveyed by the Irish Computer Society said they are not confident they would be notified if their personal data was compromised. An overwhelming majority (81.7 percent) think legislation should be introduced that requires companies to alert the Data Protection Commissioner if a breach has occurred, while 80.3 percent say legislation should be introduced that requires companies to alert customers if their data has been compromised.
Both YouTube and Wikipedia suffered outages in the past 24 hours. On Wednesday night Wikipedia was inaccessible for approximately two hours, with the online encyclopaedia citing overheating in its European datacentre as the reason. Meanwhile, online video sharing site YouTube crashed on Thursday and remained down for around an hour. Google has not yet indicated the cause of the crash.
The Google v China saga has taken another turn with GoDaddy.com, which sells internet domain names, announcing plans to stop registering domain names in China as it too protests against internet censorship in the country. Meanwhile, media reports suggest that PC giant Dell has hinted that it may be considering switching its operations from China to India.
Irish IT security firm Integrity Solutions posts revenue of EUR7.7m in 2009, up 65 percent from the EUR4.6m reported in 2008. The firm also said that the first two months of this year have started well, showing growth of 15 percent from the same period last year.
