CloudSplit wins funding for cloud app | Philips goes back to black for Q1
Dublin-based CloudSplit has been declared the winner of NDRC's LaunchPad programme, a three-month accelerator programme targeting start-ups with strong academic links. The company, which has developed a cost control application for cloud computing, won EUR24,000 in funding for its project. For more details see www.ndrc.ie.
Carphone Warehouse posted Irish losses of EUR9.5 million in 2009, partly as a result of falling sales but also because of the high cost of rental of its stores. Accounts just filed show that turnover at the firm fell 2.4 percent to EUR111.3 million. The loss for the period compares to a pre-tax profit of EUR1.9 million the previous year. Dublin app developer Furious Tribe has signed deals to create mobile apps for Royal Sun Alliance, EMI Music and Citibank.
Electronics giant Philips swung to a better-than-expected net profit in the first quarter. The company said net profit for Q1 was EUR200 million, compared with a loss of EUR59 million a year earlier. Analysts had expected net profit of EUR82.3 million. However, the Dutch company gave a cautious outlook for the rest of the year. Read more on WSJ.com.

Gadget site Gizmodo claims to have got its hands on a next-generation iPhone from Apple. "It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It's the real thing," the Gizmodo said.
