Nokia warns on profit outlook | 'Smart network' rollout to create 80 jobs

A faulty McAfee software update issued on Wednesday mistakenly identified part of Windows XP as a virus. This then caused affected PCs to restart endlessly. McAfee has since withdrawn the update, according to a blog post.

Finnish mobile giant Nokia posted first quarter profit of EUR349 million, up from EUR122 million a year ago. The mobile maker though warned that it was facing increased competitive pressure and moved to lower its operating margin estimates for the second quarter. Read more here.

The Government and Intune Networks have kicked off phase 1 of the Exemplar Communications test bed. EUR5 million has been invested in phase 1 and the pair have said that 80 jobs will be created.

The top social media sites in terms of traffic have been identified by traffic analysis firm StatCounter. Facebook is the clear winner with 48 percent of all social media traffic, while StumbleUpon is an unexpected second with 25 percent, Twitter (10 percent), YouTube (6 percent), reddit (4 percent) round off the top five. Complete Telecom has signed a three-year broadband and managed services deal with the Irish Taxation Institute. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

NovaUCD client companies created 30 high-tech jobs since the start 2010, and four new start-ups joined the incubation centre so far this year. They are: Cernam, LogScreen, SmartBuilder Software and Tethras. Read more here.

The EMEA PC market grew by 22 percent in the first quarter, according to IDC, which said that 26 million units were shipped in the region in the three-month period. Growth was driven by the 'portable PC' market, which grew by 32.2 percent. Read the full report here.
