BT Young Scientist event opens

Students from the four corners of Ireland have converged on Dublin's RDS for the 2011 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

President Mary McAleese declared the event officially open on Wednesday, saying Ireland's youth provide the hope for our recovery from recession.

Now in it's 47th year, over 500 projects have been shortlisted to participate in this year's event, with the winner set to be announced at a gala ceremony on Friday.

Some 1,138 students from 207 schools will have their efforts evaluated in the coming days before the overall winner is announced.
