The market will continue to thrive, with revenue forecast to be USD14.7 billion in 2004. Although the data management segment represents 53 percent of the overall market, strong growth in the storage infrastructure segment, led by data

replication products, and in the enterprise storage resource management segment will push data management to only 46 percent of the market by 2004.

IDC estimates that by 2003 network-delivered services will be a USD43 billion market with storage accounting for USD8 billion.

Driven by strong growth in all of its software products, particularly Symmetrix Manager, VolumeLogix and PowerPath, EMC Corporation jumped ahead of IBM/Tivoli and Computer Associates (CA) to claim the top spot in the worldwide storage management software market in 1999. EMC's license revenue was USD763.5 million in 1999, an 84 percent increase over its 1998 revenue of USD416.1 million, according to Gartner Group. IBM/Tivoli dropped to No. 2 in 1999 with market share of 17.3 percent. CA moved to the No. 3 position with 16.4 percent market share. VERITAS and BMC Software rounded out the top 5 with market share of 12.1

percent and 5.6 percent, respectively.

Demand for storage is growing fastest among Internet companies, some of which add 250,000 MBs of capacity every day. It's clear, too, that broadband Internet connections in homes will add to the data flood and the spread of wireless communication is yet another challenge. As data-storage companies ratchet up supply to meet growing demand, the actual price of storage is dropping by nearly 40 percent a year. But according to estimates from IDC, total market revenues spent on storage will rise 11 percent a year in the next four years, while storage capacity will increase at nearly 80 percent a year.
