European Commission sues Germany | Hewlett-Packard researches anti-forgery measures

The Irish Independent reports that employment at IDA-assisted companies in Ireland last year rose to its highest level since 2001. Read the full story on ENN.

According to the Financial Times, handset maker Motorola has admitted it is worried about the effect of Apple's iPhone, which launches in the US on Friday. "I do worry about [the iPhone] because [Apple] is a great competitor; a very respectable, credible, tough competitor to have in the industry," said Padmasree Warrior, Motorola's chief technology officer. However, she claimed the iPhone had weaknesses and predicted it would appeal only to a "small part of the market". Look out for more news on the iPhone elsewhere on ENN on Thursday.

The Wall Street Journal says that the European Commission has sued Germany in its highest court for Berlin's refusal to change a law shielding Deutsche Telekom's broadband network from rivals. The European Court of Justice will have to decide if Germany can keep a law giving Deutsche Telekom a de facto monopoly on a glass-fibre DSL network that it built, to allow it to recoup costs. "Our position hasn't changed. We still consider the allegations as being unjustified," said a spokeswoman for Germany's Economics Ministry.

The paper also says that several major Hollywood movie studios have filed a lawsuit against two websites that direct users to online videos, alleging that they contribute to and profit from copyright infringement. The Motion Picture Association of America filed the suits in the US District Court in Los Angeles against YouTVpc.com and Peekvid.com on behalf of the studios, which include Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox Film. YouTVpc.com and Peekvid.com provide users with menus of links to video clips that are stored on other sites' computer servers.

The same paper says that Hewlett-Packard is researching a way of marking new paper documents with a bar code that helps prevent forgeries. "Trusted Hardcopy," HP's internal name for the project, is one of several innovations that are part of a big push by the PC maker to devise products for specific markets that will also have broader use. The new technology is particularly aimed at combating forgery in India, where it is one of the most common types of fraud.
