Italian police serve up 'Phish and Chip' operation | Grisoft acquires AVG UK & Ireland

Grisoft, the maker of AVG internet security software, has acquired AVG UK & Ireland, which has been its official business partner and authorised operator in the region since 2001. AVG has over 50 million users worldwide and the firm said the AVG UK & Ireland operation has been a key factor in this growth.

Mobile handset maker Motorola has completed the acquisition of communications software firm Leapstone Systems. Leapstone provides a platform for creating, managing and delivering converged video, voice and data service bundles across multiple networks and devices The two companies announced a definitive merger agreement on 10 July.

Hosting365 has re-launched www.register365.com as the firm's new business division. The new Register365 division will be responsible for growing Hosting365's market share in domain names and shared hosting in the Irish market and for expanding the business abroad. The site was originally set up four years ago to provide domain name registrations.

Irish IT security firm Commtech has been appointed as a distributor in Ireland for Juniper Networks' internet protocol networking and security products. Under the agreement Commtech will distribute Juniper's entire portfolio of networking and security solutions to resellers in Ireland.

Canon has launched 30 new products including six digital cameras and two fax machines. The new releases also include the HG10 camcorder, three projectors and two scanners.

IT security firm Finjan has welcomed the arrest of 26 people in Italy in one of Europe's largest ever phishing cases. The arrests were made in an operation dubbed 'Phish and Chip' by the local press and followed on from an attack on more than 10,000 web pages last month which used them to harvest account details using phishing e-mails. Yuval Ben-Itzhak, Finjan's chief technology officer, said that the Italian police arrests represent a major milestone in stamping out the problem of organised crime on the internet.
